The Relevance of Cloud Computing Applications . Cloud computing is the idea of applications being operated, stored, and maintained over the Internet, by an off-site service provider.  Everything from goofy computer games to serious business applications are available over the “cloud,” or Internet.

With cloud computing, there are many different applications, but how relevant are they for a small business? Are they really needed?  These are the questions going through many business owners’ heads.  Unfortunately, the only way to answer these questions would be for a business owner to spend an incalculable amount of time researching each and every one of them.  And while many try to accomplish just that, it would be impossible to know whether or not each cloud computing application is right for your business.

However, one indisputably important application operating over the cloud is available from a variety of providers:  Customer relationship management (CRM) applications.  CRM applications can help manage customers effectively and ensure that they are treated properly. Because of that, it’s vital for a business to consider CRM applications to help them stay in-tune to their customer base.  And that’s true whether the business is large, small, or somewhere in between.  Although CRM applications operating over the cloud have their advantages—low overhead expenditures, accessibility, and instant updates, to name a few—not all businesses seem to think that cloud computing is the way to go when it comes to CRM. That’s mostly due to concerns over safety and privacy, since there’s a serious worry that the server that holds the data could be hacked into and the information on it stolen. If there are sensitive pieces of information,such as account numbers, the potential for problems is a frightening risk to consider. Any server can be hacked into, though, and using cloud computing doesn’t mean a business is at any more of a risk than using a server that belongs to their own company.

The conventional alternative to cloud computing is the idea of running and operating software on a company’s own servers and computers  The alternative, however, can cost a lot more.  Storing the servers and having IT professionals install and maintain each individual computer’s software is a cost not many business owners want to endure.  Cloud computing helps avoid that kind of pricey conundrum, because the applications are updated and provided by a service provider, using their resources, and available on a pay-per-usage plan, meaning businesses do not need to pay for what they do not use.  The savings offered by cloud computing can then be passed down to the customers, meaning that the saved revenues can allow for more money being allocated to customer service or product development.  Affordability is not the only feature of cloud computing, though.
